Escape the city heat and conquer the iconic crater rim of Mount Longonot. This exhilarating day hike takes you through a lush mountain forest inhabited by wildlife, leading to a soaring peak that offers 360 degree views of the Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha. Perfect for adventure seekers looking for a challenging but rewarding one-day escape from Nairobi.
06:00 AM | Departure from Nairobi: Our journey begins early to beat the Nairobi traffic and ensure we arrive at the park while the air is still cool. We head northwest toward the Great Rift Valley, enjoying the lush green highlands of Limuru along the way.
We make a brief, scenic stop at the famous Escarpment Viewpoint. Take in the breathtaking sunrise over the valley floor and snap photos of the expansive landscape before descending the winding road toward Mai Mahiu.
08:00 AM | Arrival at Mount Longonot National Park: After a quick check-in at the KWS gate, we begin our briefing. Our hike starts on a gentle paved path that quickly transitions into a rugged trail through cedar and olive forests. Keep an eye out for zebras, giraffes, and gazelles grazing at the base.
We will reach the first major milestone: the rim of the volcano. At 2,150 meters, the views to the forest-filled caldera are spectacular. From here, you have the choice to relax and enjoy the view or proceed with the Rim Walk. For those opting for the full circuit, we continue the 7.2km trek around the rim. We reach the highest peak of the mountain, offering 360 degree views of Lake Naivasha, the Aberdare Ranges, and the smoking vents of the geothermal plants in the distance.
01:00 PM | The Descent & Picnic Lunch: We begin our descent back to the park gate. Once at the base, we’ll enjoy a well-deserved picnic lunch (own cost) and some time to rest in the shade of the acacia trees.
Optional Lake Naivasha Boat Ride (Add-on) Since we finished early, we have the option to drive 20 minutes to Lake Naivasha for a relaxing boat safari to see hippos and African fish eagles before heading back to Nairobi.
04:30 PM | Journey Back to Nairobi: We begin our drive back, aiming to arrive in the city by early evening, leaving you refreshed and ready for the next day.
NOTE: Plastic disposal bottles are not allowed inside the park; please consider using reusable water bottles. It’s also a good idea to carry a small towel, hat, sunglasses and sun cream
